Steel Pipe Standards in Indonesia: SNI 39:2024, SNI 0068:2013, and SNI 8052:2014

May 13, 2026
Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!

In addition to international standards such as ASTM, JIS, or AWWA, Indonesia also has national standards for steel pipes established by the National Standardization Agency (BSN). These standards are known as SNI (Indonesian National Standard) and serve as an important reference to ensure quality, safety, and compliance of steel pipe products with construction and industrial needs in the country. Let's discuss further about SNI 39:2024, SNI 0068:2013, and SNI 8052:2014 in the article #SEAPIPipeInsights!

SNI 39:2024

SNI 39:2024 regulates carbon steel pipes or alloy steel pipes manufactured by electric resistance welding (ERW) or submerged arc welding (SAW), either with longitudinal seams (LSAW) or spiral seams (HSAW), with zinc coating (galvanized / hot dip galvanizing) or without coating, used for water pipelines and gas installations.
This standard divides steel pipes into several classes based on wall thickness:
  • SNI 39:2024 Light Class -> diameter range from 15 mm (½ inch) up to 2,000 mm (80 inch) with thickness range from 2.0 mm to 14.3 mm.
  • SNI 39:2024 Medium Class -> diameter range from 15 mm (½ inch) up to 2,000 mm (80 inch) with thickness range from 2.6 mm to 15.9 mm.
  • SNI 39:2024 Heavy Class -> diameter range from 15 mm (½ inch) up to 2,000 mm (80 inch) with thickness range from 2.8 mm to 19.1 mm.
SNI 39:2024 has become one of the most popular steel pipe standards in the Indonesian market and industry due to its flexibility in covering light to heavy requirements. With the classification of Light, Medium, and Heavy, engineers and contractors can select steel pipes according to pressure, load, and project applications. Using SNI-standard steel pipes not only ensures quality and safety but also supports compliance with national regulations and increases customer confidence in construction results.

SNI 0068:2013

SNI 0068:2013 applies to carbon steel pipes for general construction. This standard is used in building structures, steel frameworks, scaffolding, and other construction applications. Carbon steel pipes under this standard are divided into several quality classes:
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 1 PKB (STK) - 290 and PKP (STKR) - 290
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 2 PKB (STK) - 400 and PKP (STKR) - 400
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 3 PKB (STK) - 490 and PKP (STKR) - 490
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 4 PKB (STK) - 500 and PKP (STKR) - 500
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 5 PKB (STK) - 540 and PKP (STKR) - 540
PKB refers to carbon steel pipes for general construction with round shape, while PKP refers to carbon steel pipes for general construction with square shape.

For alloy steel pipes, SNI 0068:2013 is divided into several quality classes:
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 1P PKBP (STK) - 490 and PKPP (STKR) - 490
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 2P PKBP (STK) - 500 and PKPP (STKR) - 500
  • SNI 0068:2013 Class 3P PKBP (STK) - 540 and PKPP (STKR) - 540
PKBP refers to alloy steel pipes for general construction with round shape, while PKPP refers to alloy steel pipes for general construction with square shape.

SNI 8052:2014

SNI 8052:2014 regulates steel pipe piles used as foundations in major infrastructure projects such as bridges, docks, and high-rise buildings. This standard divides steel pipe piles into classes based on mechanical properties:
  • SNI 8052:2014 Class 1 with tensile strength 345 MPa and yield strength 205 MPa
  • SNI 8052:2014 Class 2 with tensile strength 415 MPa and yield strength 240 MPa
  • SNI 8052:2014 Class 3 with tensile strength 455 MPa and yield strength 310 MPa
Steel pipes under SNI 8052:2014 are also manufactured by welding processes including electric resistance welding (ERW), longitudinal submerged arc welding (LSAW), and spiral submerged arc welding (HSAW).

The Importance of Using SNI-Standard Steel Pipes

With SNI standards, Indonesia ensures that steel pipe products circulating in the market meet quality and safety requirements. Using SNI-standard steel pipes means supporting national construction quality, increasing customer trust, and ensuring projects run in compliance with applicable regulations.
