Steel Pipes for the Petrochemical Sector

June 03, 2026
Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!

Welcome back to #SEAPIPipeInsights! This time we will discuss steel pipes for the petrochemical sector. The petrochemical industry requires steel pipes with high resistance to pressure, temperature, and aggressive chemical fluids. Welded steel pipes are the main choice because they can be produced in large diameters, with pipe lengths made according to project needs with a length of 6 meters or 12 meters, and meet international quality standards.

Product Standards

Steel pipe products for the petrochemical sector are produced according to international standards, including:
  • API 5L  - API 5L is the standard for line pipe used in oil and gas, covering welded pipe (ERW, SAW, Seamless). It is used for pipelines transporting chemical fluids and hydrocarbons. For fluids containing H₂S or corrosive elements, API 5L Sour Service (MS) according to PSL2 with low sulfur and phosphorus limits is applied.
  • ASTM A53 - ASTM A53 is the standard specification for steel pipe, black and hot-dipped zinc-coated, welded and seamless. It includes Type E (ERW – Electric Resistance Welded) and Type F (Furnace Butt Welded). It is used for water, gas, steam pipelines, and mechanical applications in petrochemical facilities. ASTM A53 Grade A has lower carbon content, making it suitable for low-pressure applications and utility systems, while ASTM A53 Grade B has higher tensile strength, making it more suitable for medium-pressure fluid pipelines in petrochemical facilities. For the petrochemical sector, Grade B welded pipe is more commonly used because of its superior strength and durability.
  • ASTM A139 - ASTM A139 is the standard for arc-welded steel pipe with large diameters (NPS 4 and above). It is used for transporting fluids, gas, and steam in large volumes within industrial facilities.
  • ASTM A671 - ASTM A671 is the standard for electric-fusion-welded steel pipe from carbon steel plate. Suitable for low to moderate pressure service, such as steam or hot water pipelines in refineries. Available in various tensile strength grades (50–70 ksi) and weld inspection classes (radiographic/ultrasonic).
  • ASTM A672 - ASTM A672 is the standard for electric-fusion-welded steel pipe from carbon and alloy steel plate. Specifically for high-pressure service at moderate temperature. Suitable for high-pressure fluid pipelines in petrochemical plants, such as hydrocarbon transport.

Main Applications

  • Chemical Fluid Transportation → main pipelines for gas, hydrocarbons, and liquid chemicals.
  • Refinery Utility Systems → pipelines for steam, hot water, and cooling systems.
  • Large Diameter Pipes → distribution of fluids in large volumes within petrochemical facilities.
  • Protection and Safety → welded steel pipes for fire protection systems and supporting utilities.

Implementation of SEAPI Steel Pipes in Petrochemical Projects

SEAPI steel pipe products have been used in various national petrochemical projects. With strict ASTM and API standards, SEAPI supports the construction of safe and efficient refineries and petrochemical plants. Some of our project experiences include Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang, Petro Kimia Gresik, Trans-Pacific Petrochemical Indotama, and many other projects.

Conclusion

With product standards including ASTM A53, ASTM A671, ASTM A672, ASTM A139, and API 5L, Southeast Asia Pipe Industries (SEAPI) steel pipes are ready to support petrochemical projects in Indonesia. SEAPI’s presence in the petrochemical sector is tangible evidence of our commitment to providing high-quality steel pipe solutions to support the national energy and chemical industry.
