Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!
Welcome back to #SEAPIPipeInsight!, where we explore insights about steel pipes. This time we will take a closer look at sour service steel pipes. In the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, there are operating conditions known as sour service, which refers to environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). This gas is highly corrosive and can cause various forms of damage to steel. Because of its aggressive nature, steel pipes with special specifications are required to ensure safe use under extreme conditions.
What is Sour Service?
Sour service is a term used in the oil and gas industry to describe operating environments that contain H₂S, commonly referred to as “acidic environments.” H₂S can originate from crude oil or natural gas produced from wells.
According to API 5L standards, steel pipes for sour service must meet specific requirements, including:
- PSL 1 is not applicable → only PSL 2 is recognized for sour service.
- Special grades with low sulfur and phosphorus content, such as API 5L Grade BMS, X42MS, X46MS, X52MS, X60MS, X65MS, and X70MS.
- Compliance with international standards such as NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, which set material requirements to resist cracking in H₂S environments.
In addition, sour service steel pipes must undergo special testing to ensure resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking and stress in H₂S environments.
Sour Service Pipe Testing
To ensure quality and reliability, sour service steel pipes are not only produced with special chemical compositions but must also undergo additional testing. These tests are designed to confirm that the pipes can withstand H₂S environments.
In general, the tests include:
- Hydrogen-Induced Cracking (HIC Test)
- Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC Test)
Conclusion
Sour service steel pipes are designed as a solution to meet the challenges of operating environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). With special API 5L PSL2 standards and grades, along with additional testing such as HIC and SSC, these pipes are engineered to remain safe under extreme conditions.
For the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, choosing sour service pipes is not just a technical decision but a strategic step to ensure safety, efficiency, and operational sustainability.
